Who we work with

Bookkeeping for Handyman Businesses

Forty invoices a month between $150 and $900, paid by card, check and cash app, from a truck that also does the school run. Handyman books are not complicated. They are easy to let slide, and the slide shows up as a tax bill nobody planned for.

Many small invoices

Volume is the challenge. Your bookkeeper reconciles the invoicing or payment app to the bank monthly, so card fees, tips and refunds are recorded and every invoice is either paid or chased. Materials bought per job are coded to the job when the receipt says which one, and to supplies when it does not.

The truck, mileage and the personal line

A vehicle used for both work and life needs either a mileage log or a business-use percentage, and the books need to keep personal spending out of expenses altogether. Owner draws recorded as draws rather than as costs are the single most common fix on a handyman file, and the one that most changes the profit the tax preparer sees.

Growing past one person

The first helper raises payroll, workers’ comp and classification questions that did not exist before. Your bookkeeper runs payroll in any state and will flag when the business has reached the size where the sole-proprietor question is worth raising with your tax preparer, which is a tax question and not one your bookkeeper answers itself.

If you are not sure $250 a month is worth it yet, say so in the request. Your bookkeeper will tell you honestly, and it costs nothing to ask.

Handyman Businesses: common questions

Is $250 a month worth it for a one-person business?

Honestly, sometimes not yet. If the books are a few dozen transactions a month and you keep them current yourself, your bookkeeper will say so. It becomes worth it when invoices outrun your evenings or the first helper starts.

Cash app and cash payments?

Recorded like any other receipt. Your bookkeeper reconciles the app to the bank and asks about cash so the books are complete.

Should I be an LLC or S corporation?

That is a tax and legal question for your preparer or attorney. Your bookkeeper keeps books for any structure and will flag when the question is worth asking.
